New products for in situ conservation of underwater artifacts

The research will be aimed to the development of new formulations, based on nanomaterials, for the preservation of natural and artificial stone materials located in marine environment.

New products which provide protection in marine environment will be identified on the basis of the knowledge acquired in subaerial environment. In this context, new types of mortars, consolidants and protective agents will be developed and tested, with a particular attention on the deteriorating effects linked to the action of the biological component. Also the effectiveness of various types of geotextile coverings to be applied on some artefacts, with specific and different techniques, will be verified. At the same time, new, non-invasive cleaning techniques will be identified.
